From Left to Right: Timothy Leow and Godwin Tan, co-founders of Red Dot Magic. Learn how to light this below!
It’s time for your weekly Get Featured! I’m especially excited for the launch of today’s Get Featured as we are featuring Red Dot Magic, which is poised to become Singapore’s number 1 Magic Portal. We’re going to begin with a few interview questions about the founders of Red Dot Magic, Godwin Tan and Timothy Leow, who are the subject of today’s Get Featured! As always, we’ll begin with the ‘standard’ 5 questions:

Give us a brief introduction about Red Dot Magic.
Red Dot Magic (RDM) was started in August 2008 during a Geography lecture at Anglo-Chinese Junior College. While the lecturer was talking about formation of volcanoes, founders-to-be Godwin and Timothy were chatting passionately about the birth of RDM.
What’s going on in RDM at the moment?
We are in the midst of relaunching our site with a brand new look. We will also be restructuring our published content and they will be proliferated through different mediums. Our crew members come from diverse backgrounds and are in different phases of their lives. However, we have all been brought together by the ethereal bond of Magic.
Tell us a little more about RDM.
We could not find any online magic news portals or magazines that cater to magicians. Almost every publication lacked quality and bite-sized content. Other organizations required a membership fee before we could be initiated into their “circle” of magicians. There were no websites dedicated to raising the profile of magicians. The truth is, as magicians, we are artists. Magic is our art. It is an art that is incredibly hard to master, especially with all its nuances and differing schools of thought. In other words, we believe that both magicians and Magic deserves more attention and recognition from the world.
We feel that there is no better time to promote the art of Magic. Information has never been so pervasive. The birth of YouTube has provided a medium for magicians to showcase their art. With many magic shows featured on mainstream media, the general public has many chances to be exposed. This has led to the reinvention of Magic to remain fresh in the public’s eye. This is an exciting time for all magicians and we want to be at the forefront of the charge.
Where do you see yourself and RDM heading in the next 5 years?
We are planning to organise a series of lectures and competitions for magicians within the next 2 years. Hopefully in the next 5 years, we will be able to organise a convention that will bring Magic closer to the public. Red Dot Magic would also have accumulated enough readers to be the largest online magic portal in South East Asia. After that, we will continue to take on the world!
What’s a word or phrase you feel describes you best?
A dynamic team dedicated to elevating the art of Magic.

Finally, here’s how I lit the photos.
Photo of Tim & Godwin: Shot of Tim and Godwin, at Oosh @ Dempsey, headshot. ISO 200, 60mm @ f2.8, 1/30 sec. The interesting texture of the wood makes for a great background. Key light is one off-camera flash, YN-560 through a bounce softbox-brolly. Lovely yellow highlights from another off-camera flash, SB-600 triggered in manual mode, with a 1/2 CTO gel held high left by assistant.
Photo of Tim and his magic cane: Shot of Tim, at Oosh @ Dempsey, 3/4 body. ISO 200, 60mm @ f2.8, 1/30 sec. Shot at the bar. Key light is one off-camera flash, YN-560 through my Lumiquest Softbox III, held by assistant. SB-600 triggered in manual mode, on light stand to the left of Tim, bounced at ceiling to give a spotlight effect whilst raising the light levels of the ambiance.
